The real story begins in 1971 in San Rafael, California, with a group of high school students who called themselves “the Waldos.” These bell-bottomed buddies stumbled onto something that would change cannabis culture forever.
A friend’s brother had been growing cannabis in the woods at Point Reyes but was worried about getting busted. He drew a map and gave the teens permission to harvest the crop themselves.
Meeting at 4:20 After School
The Waldos would meet at 4:20 p.m.—right after classes and football practice—at their school’s statue of chemist Louis Pasteur. They’d smoke a joint and head out on their treasure hunt.
- They never actually found the hidden cannabis patch
- Their code phrase “420 Louie” eventually shortened to just “420”
- The term became their private slang for anything cannabis-related
- They saved postmarked letters from the 1970s as proof of the term’s origin
When the Oxford English Dictionary added “420” in 2017, it cited the Waldos’ documents as the earliest recorded uses of the term.
How the Grateful Dead Spread the Word
The story could have ended there, but one of the Waldos had a brother who was close friends with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. The Waldos began hanging out in the band’s circle, and their slang naturally spread through the Dead community.
Fast-forward to the early 1990s: Steve Bloom, a reporter for High Times magazine, received a flier at a Dead show urging people to “meet at 4:20 on 4/20.” High Times published it, and the rest is history.
From Private Code to Global Celebration
What makes this story remarkable is how organically it spread. There was no marketing campaign or corporate push—just word of mouth through the Grateful Dead’s massive following.
